SOP - Inspecting Completed Work

Purpose

To establish a standardized procedure for inspecting completed line painting work, ensuring lines are straight, consistent, and meet client expectations.

Scope

This SOP applies to all personnel responsible for inspecting and approving completed line painting work on roads, parking lots, or other surfaces.

Procedure

Step 1: Pre-Inspection Preparation

  1. Ensure the Paint is Dry:

    • Wait for the paint to dry completely before conducting the inspection to avoid smudging or inaccuracies.
  2. Gather Inspection Tools:

    • Measuring tape or ruler.
    • Chalk line or straightedge.
    • Client-approved design or project blueprint.
    • Camera or smartphone for documentation.
  3. Review Client Specifications:

    • Confirm the project details, including:
      • Line dimensions (length, width, spacing).
      • Colors and patterns.
      • Stencil placement (e.g., handicap symbols, arrows).

Step 2: Conduct the Inspection

  1. Visual Inspection:

    • Walk along the painted lines and visually assess for:
      • Straightness and uniformity.
      • Consistency in paint thickness and coverage.
      • Proper alignment with chalk lines or markings.
  2. Measure Key Dimensions:

    • Verify that line widths and lengths match the client’s specifications.
    • Check spacing between lines to ensure they are even and symmetrical.
  3. Check for Defects:

    • Identify and document any of the following:
      • Uneven edges or paint overspray.
      • Gaps or breaks in the paint.
      • Smudges, streaks, or inconsistent coloring.
  4. Inspect Stencil Applications:

    • Confirm that stencils are aligned and positioned correctly.
    • Ensure symbols or text are legible and meet required dimensions.

Step 3: Client Review

  1. Invite the Client to Inspect:

    • Walk through the completed work with the client, highlighting key areas.
    • Address any questions or concerns they may have during the inspection.
  2. Document Client Feedback:

    • Record any requested adjustments or corrections for follow-up.
    • Obtain the client’s verbal or written approval once they are satisfied.

Step 4: Post-Inspection Actions

  1. Perform Touch-Ups:

    • Correct any defects or areas identified during the inspection.
    • Use a small brush or sprayer to fix gaps, uneven edges, or faded sections.
  2. Clean the Work Area:

    • Remove debris, masking tape, and equipment from the site.
    • Ensure the area is clean and safe for public or client use.
  3. Document the Inspection:

    • Take clear photos of the completed work, focusing on key areas.
    • Save the documentation in the project file for future reference.
  4. Update the Project Log:

    • Record the inspection date, findings, and any corrective actions taken.
    • Mark the project as completed in the job schedule.
