SOP - Anatomy of Loading a U-Haul Trailer

Purpose

To ensure safe and efficient loading of a U-Haul trailer, minimizing risks and ensuring stability while driving.

Procedure

Step 1: Park on a Level Surface

  • Park the vehicle and trailer on a flat, stable surface.
  • Use wheel chocks to secure the trailer and prevent any movement during loading.

Step 2: Distribute Weight 60/40

  • Load 60% of the total weight at the front of the trailer (ahead of the axle).
  • Load the remaining 40% towards the back of the trailer.
  • Ensure the weight is evenly distributed side-to-side to prevent swaying.

Step 3: Load Heavier Items First

  • Place heavier items near the center of the trailer to maintain balance.
  • Arrange heavy items so they do not shift during transit.

Step 4: Lightweight Items on Top

  • Stack lighter items on top of the heavier base items.
  • Ensure the trailer’s maximum weight capacity is not exceeded.

Step 5: Tie Down the Load

  • Use bungee cords, ratchet straps, or safety straps to secure the load.
  • Prevent taller loads from shifting by tying them down tightly.

What to Avoid When Loading

  • Overfilling the Trailer:
    • Avoid exceeding the trailer’s maximum weight capacity (check the label inside the trailer).
    • Do not leave items hanging over the edge of the trailer.
  • Uneven Weight Distribution:
    • Keep the trailer balanced to avoid swaying or instability.

Why Weight and Distribution Matter

Improper weight distribution can lead to:

  • Uncontrolled trailer swaying at high speeds.
  • Increased risk of accidents and damage to the trailer or vehicle.
  • Reduced braking effectiveness and vehicle control.

Proper weight distribution ensures a safe, stable ride and minimizes risks on the road.

Safe Trailering Tips

  • Don’t Exceed the Trailer’s Max Weight:
    • Check the maximum weight capacity label inside the trailer.
  • Reduce Your Speed:
    • Avoid driving over 55 mph while towing a trailer.
  • Wear Your Seatbelt:
    • Ensures your safety in case of sudden stops or accidents.
  • Keep the Tailgate Closed:
    • Do not let items hang out of the back of the trailer.
  • Test Trailer Lights:
    • Ensure that the brake lights, turn signals, and tail lights are functional.
  • Select the Right Hitch:
    • Choose a hitch that can handle the combined weight of the trailer and its load.
    • Consult a U-Haul Hitch Professional if unsure about the hitch requirements.

Additional Notes

  • Always inspect the trailer and hitch setup before hitting the road.
  • Contact your local U-Haul center for help with selecting the right trailer or hitch.

Training and Compliance

  • Ensure all staff members responsible for loading trailers are trained in this SOP.
  • This SOP should be reviewed annually or as needed to incorporate new safety recommendations.
